Does my phone work in Mexico? What US carriers include, and when you still need an eSIM
In short
Many US phone plans already include Mexico: T-Mobile Experience Beyond, for one, gives 30GB of high-speed data there (checked on October 29, 2026). Eligible AT&T plans, Verizon Unlimited, Experience More, Google Fi, Cricket and Visible+ include it too. Check your plan before you buy anything.
Information verified on October 29, 2026 at the official sources listed below. Carriers change prices and terms; your own plan decides what you pay.

This site is not affiliated with any carrier named on this page; we sell eSIMs. How we compare
You may not need an eSIM. If Mexico is included in your plan, you can use your US phone in Mexico at no extra cost. A week in Cancun or Mexico City then runs on your own line: same number, nothing to install.
An eSIM helps when Mexico is not on your plan, when its data or speed falls short, or on a stay of several weeks.
Two bill traps come first. Without an eligible plan, AT&T charges $2.05 per MB of data (AT&T pay-per-use rates). On a Verizon line that pays by the day, a call, a text or background data can start a $6 TravelPass day (Verizon TravelPass FAQs).
Long stays have limits too: Verizon sets a 50% rule (Verizon), and T-Mobile’s benefit is “Not for extended international use” (T-Mobile). We compare public packages; check your own plan.

eSIM for Mexico: selected plans
The entry plan, our pick and a bigger one. “Our pick” is a mid-size plan chosen by us, not a sales ranking.
You are charged exactly the price shown, in US dollars. The seller is a company registered in the United States, so this is a payment to a US business — how card payment works. It appears on your statement as JET SHARING. You pay on the secure Stripe checkout page, by card, or Apple Pay or Google Pay if Stripe shows them on your device.
What it costs per day
The plan price is what you pay for the trip; a day is that price over the plan’s own days, so a longer plan costs less a day only if you use those days. Pick by your trip length first.
How we compared the ways to get data in Mexico
On October 29, 2026, we compared three ways to get data in Mexico: carrier plans and passes, a Mexican SIM or eSIM, and ours. We judged each on the price for your trip length, how much data you get, the network, and what your phone needs.
Carrier figures come from each carrier’s own page, with the check date beside them. Mexican carriers’ visitor terms are not in our checked facts, so the local option is weighed on what your phone needs, not on price.
To set the scale, we priced Mexico plans from travel-eSIM sellers, from a US IP, on October 29, 2026. Their middle price for Mexico was $9.50 for 3GB and $24 for 10GB over 30 days. Ours for the same sizes are $7.99 and $17.99, data only.
We sell one of the options compared here, so we rank no sellers and name none. Our methodology page lists the rules: public packages only, one check date, and every sum we compute marked as ours.
Roaming or an eSIM in Mexico: a week, and a month visiting family
Does my phone work in Mexico for a week at no extra cost? On a plan that includes Mexico, yes. On a daily charge, seven days come to $35 on Spectrum’s $5 Day Pass and $42 on Verizon’s $6 TravelPass (our arithmetic).
The table prices one phone for seven days in Mexico. Monthly add-ons are charged for the whole month, even on a one-week trip.
| One phone, 7 days in Mexico | Cost, our arithmetic | Data |
|---|---|---|
| A plan that includes Mexico | $0 extra | The plan’s own allowance and limit |
| Verizon Prepaid $35 Talk & Text, Prepaid TravelPass at $6/line per day | $42 | 5 GB a day at high speed, then 3G |
| Spectrum Mobile Global Day Pass, $5 for 24 hours | $35 | 1 GB a day at high speed, then reduced |
| Metro by T-Mobile add-on, monthly | $5 or $10 | Up to 5 GB or up to 10 GB |
| T-Mobile Prepaid add-on, monthly | $5 | Up to 5GB at high speed |
| Xfinity By the Gig pass, monthly | $5 | 5 GB at high speed, then 3G |
| Boost Mobile add-on, monthly | $10 | 5 GB |
| Our Mexico plan, 1GB, 7 days | $3.99 | 1GB, data only |
| Our Mexico plan, 5GB, 30 days | $12.99 | 5GB, data only |
Carrier prices as each carrier prints them (checked on October 29, 2026: Verizon Prepaid, Spectrum, Metro, T-Mobile Prepaid, Xfinity, Boost).
Where an eSIM does not win: four monthly add-ons. T-Mobile Prepaid, Metro, Xfinity By the Gig and Boost give 5 GB or more for $5 to $10, on your own number.
An eSIM fits when your line has no data in Mexico, as on AT&T Prepaid’s $20, $25 and Unlimited Saver plans. It also fits T-Mobile Essentials, whose data there runs at up to 128kbps.
A month visiting family tests each carrier’s limits more than its price. Verizon’s 50% rule looks at usage over 60 days (Verizon TravelPass FAQs), and 35 days in Mexico are 58% of that window (our arithmetic).
Usage decides it, not days, and Verizon’s pages disagree on the place: Canada or Mexico on one, any country outside the US on another. Check your plan before a long stay.
T-Mobile’s terms call the benefit “Not for extended international use” and set no number of days (T-Mobile). If Experience Beyond’s 30GB has to last 35 days, that is about 0.86GB a day; More’s 15GB is about 0.43GB a day (our arithmetic).
Cricket writes its 3-month 50% rule for Canada only (Cricket).
Our Mexico plans run 30 days at most: 10GB is $17.99 and 20GB is $30.99, data only. A 35-day stay outlasts one plan, so the last days need a second one.
About 14 million US residents flew to Mexico in 2025 (NTTO, Survey of International Air Travelers, 2025). The Census Bureau counts an estimated 11.14 million US residents born in Mexico (ACS 2024). Roaming or eSIM prices your own dates and data.
Mexico SIM card, Telcel or a travel eSIM?
A US iPhone 14 or later has no slot for a Mexican SIM card. Apple says those models “purchased in the United States can only be activated with an eSIM” (checked on October 29, 2026, Apple).
Searching for a Telcel eSIM? Mexican carriers sell their own local SIM cards and eSIMs. We haven’t verified their visitor terms, so we print no price, store or ID rule.
At least one US carrier already roams on Telcel: Cricket names its partners in Mexico as “iUSACell (AT&T Mexico) and Telcel” (checked on October 29, 2026, Cricket).
An older iPhone or an Android phone with a SIM tray can take a Mexican SIM card once it is unlocked. We sell no physical SIM cards; Do iPhones have SIM cards? explains which models still have a tray.
On a cruise that stops in Cozumel or Progreso, an eSIM works in port, not at sea. Cruise phone plans covers the ship’s own network.
What our Mexico plan covers
Our Mexico plan runs on one network,
Movistar 4G, and is data only (plan details as of October 29, 2026). The plan’s clock starts when your phone first connects in Mexico, not when you buy it.
Where Movistar has no signal, the plan has no second network to fall back on. The plan doesn’t state a hotspot rule — check the plan page.
Our Latin America plan lists Telcel Claro in Mexico. Our Mexico plans show every size, and How much data do I need? helps size a week in Cancun.
Before you go: unlocked phone, data roaming, your US number
Settle three things at home: the unlock, the data roaming switches and your US number. Apple says that to use another carrier while traveling, “your iPhone cannot be locked to a carrier” (checked on October 29, 2026, Apple).
Apple’s unlock page says only your current carrier can unlock an iPhone, so put in the request before the trip (Apple). Install the eSIM on home Wi-Fi with our install guide.
If both lines stay on, Apple says the travel eSIM is used for data, and “You might still incur roaming fees from your home eSIM.” Data roaming on and off shows where the US line’s switch is.
The U.S. Department of State rates Mexico Level 2: “Exercise Increased Caution” (updated May 28, 2026, travel.state.gov). See its page for state-by-state advice.
Calls home depend on the plan. AT&T and T-Mobile include talk and text between the US, Mexico and Canada on eligible plans. Verizon says calling, texting and data in Mexico are included on its Unlimited plans.
T-Mobile’s page names only data for Essentials, so check that plan for calls. Keep the home line on for texts and 2FA codes to your US number. Keep your US number covers what still arrives abroad and what it can cost.
A week in Mexico: your US carrier vs eSIM
May be included in some postpaid or prepaid plans of 8 of 9 US carriers5.6GB for 7 days (0.8GB a day, social media and photos): what it costs with AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile. We compare each carrier’s public day passes and travel passes. Some plans have high-speed data abroad built in, then reduced speed (for example AT&T Elite 2.0, T-Mobile Experience More and Beyond, Verizon’s and Google Fi’s top plans), and many include Mexico and Canada, so check your own plan. Mexico may already be in some postpaid or prepaid plans of 8 of the 9 US carriers we compare (16 US carriers listed; 9 with published passes compared).
On roaming your US number also takes calls and texts; our eSIM plans here are data only. Carrier prices as published, before taxes and fees, checked on October 29, 2026; the eSIM at its price in US dollars, charged by card exactly as shown. This site is not affiliated with these carriers; we sell eSIMs. Work out your own trip.
Check before you fly
What if the eSIM doesn’t work when you land in Mexico?
Check four settings, in this order, before you write to us.
The first is the line for cellular data. In the phone’s SIM settings, pick the travel line for cellular data; your US line stays on for calls and texts, with its cellular data off.
The second is data roaming, for the eSIM line only. The eSIM is a foreign profile, so the phone treats Mexico as roaming for it.
The third is the APN. On this plan it sets itself, so leave it alone; you don’t need to type one.
The fourth is a restart. Restart the phone or switch Airplane Mode on and off, and let it find Movistar; this can take a few minutes after you leave the plane.
Still no data? Write to us on WhatsApp or at support@esimworld.us with your order number, or go through the no-signal checklist. Do not delete the eSIM to “try again”: a deleted profile usually cannot be installed twice from the same code. If the eSIM doesn't work and it isn't your phone's fault, we refund the payment whether or not it was installed.
What I’d choose (and when NOT to buy the eSIM)
For a week of maps, rides and messaging I’d take 1 GB for 7 days, $3.99. For two weeks or more, with photos and social media, I’d go for 5 GB for 30 days, $12.99. If you video-call and stream every day, take the unlimited plan for 7 days, $22.99, with 3 GB a day at full speed, then reduced to 1 Mbps.
I would not recommend the eSIM in three cases. If your US plan already includes Mexico and its limit is enough for you, roaming costs you nothing extra and keeps your number (compare the carriers). If your phone has no eSIM or is locked to your carrier, it cannot take the plan: check if your phone is unlocked. And if your group travels together all day and shares one connection, a pocket Wi-Fi can cover everyone.
Frequently asked questions
Which SIM card should I get for Mexico?
Often none. Check your plan first: AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile and several smaller carriers include Mexico on eligible plans, each with its own limit. If yours does not, a US iPhone 14 or later can add a line only as an eSIM, since it has no SIM tray. Mexican carriers sell their own SIM cards and eSIMs; we haven’t verified their visitor terms.
Do I need a SIM card if I go to Mexico?
No, not on a plan that includes Mexico: your US line works there with the same number. For a separate data line, a US iPhone 14 or later takes it only as an eSIM. An older phone with a SIM tray must be unlocked before a Mexican SIM card will work in it.
Do I need to turn on data roaming in Mexico?
Yes, on the line whose data you use there: on a plan that includes Mexico, that is your US line. With a travel eSIM, switch data roaming on for the eSIM line, as its install steps say, and leave the US line’s switch off. On iPhone, Apple puts the switch under Cellular Data Options. It stops data only: on a Verizon line that pays by the day, even an answered call or a sent text starts a $6 TravelPass day.
Does my phone need to be unlocked for a Mexico eSIM?
Yes. Apple says that to use your iPhone with another carrier when traveling internationally, it cannot be locked to a carrier. Ask your current carrier before the trip: Apple says only that carrier can unlock it, and the request might take a few days.
