Does AT&T work in Mexico and Canada? Included on eligible AT&T plans, but roaming may be 2G

In short

Eligible AT&T unlimited plans include talk, text and data in Mexico and Canada. AT&T warns: “Roaming may be at 2G speeds” (checked on October 29, 2026, AT&T Mexico and Canada).

Information verified on October 29, 2026 at the official sources listed below. Carriers change prices and terms; your own plan decides what you pay.

This site is not affiliated with AT&T; we sell eSIMs. How we compare

Does AT&T work in Mexico? Yes, on eligible AT&T unlimited plans, and you may not need an eSIM. A normal trip runs on your own line and number, with no Day Pass.

Two traps come first. Without an eligible plan, AT&T bills $2 a minute for calls and $2.05 per MB of data. Three AT&T Prepaid plans include only calls to Mexico and Canada from the US.

“AT&T México” is a Mexican carrier, not your US plan. We compare public packages; check your own plan.

Which AT&T plans include Mexico and Canada?

AT&T’s plan page shows Mexico and Canada included on all four unlimited plans it compares: Elite 2.0, Premium 2.0, Extra 2.0 and Value 2.0. Each gets talk, text and plan data in and between the US, Mexico and Canada (checked on October 29, 2026, AT&T plan comparison).

Elite 2.0 and Premium 2.0 also include other countries; that part is on our AT&T roaming page. On long-stay limits, AT&T prints no 50/50 rule on the pages we checked (AT&T Unlimited Data Without Borders).

On other plans, North America roaming is an add-on: AT&T says customers can “add the Roam North America feature to select plans”. The page prints no price for it, so check your plan with AT&T before you cross the border.

Otherwise AT&T bills pay-per-use: $2 a minute for calls, $1 per text and $2.05 per MB (AT&T pay-per-use rates). Two minutes of calls plus 50MB come to $106.50 (our arithmetic). On such a line, turn data roaming off before the trip.

Calls back to the US

Talk and text in and between the US, Mexico and Canada are part of the same benefit. A call from Cancún to a US number is included on an eligible plan.

What speed will you get in Mexico and Canada?

AT&T’s Mexico and Canada page warns “Roaming may be at 2G speeds” (checked on October 29, 2026, AT&T Mexico and Canada). It adds that AT&T “may temporarily slow data speeds if the network is busy”.

For Mexico, AT&T’s other page reads: “Mexico: 2G off net data speeds may apply” (AT&T in Mexico). AT&T prints no speed figure beyond 2G, so plan a data-heavy trip for the slow case.

A Reddit user in r/ATT, answering a traveler in Cancun, described the split: high speed on one Mexican network, “up to 2G speeds” on another (Reddit, May 2023). That is one 2023 account, not an AT&T statement.

Which AT&T Prepaid plans include Mexico and Canada, and which don’t?

Two AT&T Prepaid plans have Mexico and Canada included: Unlimited Enhanced Plus, $45, and Unlimited Ultra, $45 for the first 6 months, then $60. Canada data is capped at 25GB a month, and 5G applies only in the US (checked on October 29, 2026, AT&T Prepaid plans).

AT&T Prepaid planMexico and Canada
Unlimited Enhanced Plus, $45Included, 25GB/month cap in Canada
Unlimited Ultra, $45 first 6 months, then $60Included, 25GB/month cap in Canada
$20/month (12 months prepaid, $240)Calls from the US only
AT&T Prepaid Unlimited, $25Calls from the US only

On the three cheaper plans you can call Mexico or Canada from the US, but the plan includes no service there.

When a Mexico or Canada eSIM makes sense on AT&T

On an eligible plan, a week of maps and messages in Mexico or Canada needs no eSIM. Our Mexico plan, 5GB for 30 days at $12.99, data only, makes sense if you want 4G instead of a possible 2G.

Keep the AT&T line on for calls and texts, and set the travel eSIM as the data line (Dual SIM has the steps). Our Mexico and Canada plans are data only; your US number stays on your main line for 2FA codes and texts. Roaming or eSIM compares the options, and our guides cover Mexico and Canada.

Frequently asked questions

Will AT&T charge me roaming in Mexico?

No, not on an eligible AT&T unlimited plan. Talk, text and data in Mexico and Canada are included, though roaming may be at 2G speeds (checked on October 29, 2026). Without an eligible plan, AT&T bills $2 a minute for calls and $2.05 per MB of data.

Why is my AT&T phone not working in Mexico?

Check the plan first: AT&T Prepaid $20, $25 and Unlimited Saver lines include only calls to Mexico from the US, not service there. On an eligible plan, AT&T warns that roaming may be at 2G speeds (checked on October 29, 2026). For a line that still shows no service, see the data roaming switch and eSIM no signal.

Do I need a Day Pass for Mexico or Canada?

No, not on an eligible AT&T unlimited plan: Mexico and Canada are already included (checked on October 29, 2026). AT&T’s International Day Pass, $12 a day on unlimited plans, is for travel elsewhere on its list of 210+ destinations. AT&T’s Prepaid pages do not state a Day Pass.
