How to install and activate a travel eSIM on iPhone and Android: install at home, connect on arrival

The order is the same on any phone: install the profile at home; after you land, choose that line for cellular data and turn on data roaming for it only, then wait for it to find the network. What changes is the names of the menus.

Not sure your phone supports eSIM? Check it in a minute. Short answers to everything else are in Help.

The difference that can cost you money

Installation: at home, on Wi-Fi The profile appears on your phone. For destinations where validity counts from first use, the paid days do not start yet.
Activation: at your destination The profile's first registration on the local network. For 195 of the 198 destinations in the catalog, the days start counting only from that point; for the rest, the country page says so.

iPhone in 4 steps

1. Scan the QR code At home on Wi-Fi, open the Camera app and scan the QR code from your order, opened on another screen or printed. When the Cellular Plan Detected notification appears, tap it. If the QR code is in an email on the same iPhone (iOS 17.4 or later), tap and hold the code, then tap Add eSIM.
2. Add the plan Tap Continue, then tap Add Cellular Plan. During first-time setup of the iPhone: on the Set Up Cellular screen, tap Use QR code. To type the details instead: Settings → Cellular → Add Cellular Plan → Enter Details Manually.
3. Label the new line Give the new line a label, for example Travel; you can change it later in Settings → Cellular → tap the line → Cellular Plan Label. Calls and texts stay on your US line. Leave cellular data on your US line until you land.
4. When you land, switch data to the travel line Open Settings, tap Cellular, then tap Cellular Data and choose the travel line. Then tap the travel line, tap Cellular Data Options and turn on Data Roaming for that line only.

Menus can differ by model and iOS version. eSIM is available from the iPhone XS, XS Max and XR onwards; an iPhone 14 or later bought in the United States works only with eSIM. Before you buy, check that the iPhone isn’t locked to a carrier: Settings → General → About → Carrier Lock should say “No SIM restrictions”. How to check whether your phone is unlocked.

Android in 4 steps

The order is the same as on an iPhone, but Samsung, Pixel and other brands name each option their own way. That is why the path follows what each section does, not exact names. On Android, eSIM support depends on the model, the system version and the market the phone was sold for, and the phone must not be locked to a carrier.

Android, step 0. Check compatibility

Android, step 1. Add the profile

Settings Network & internet SIMs
Add SIM Set up an eSIM
US SIM on

This is how it looks on a Pixel. On a Samsung: Settings → Connections → SIM manager → Add eSIM → Scan QR code, then restart the phone. Menus can differ by model and software version.

Android, step 2. Choose the lines

Settings Connections SIM manager
Calls US SIM
Texts US SIM
Data Travel eSIM

This is how it looks on a Samsung. On a Pixel, choose the lines in Settings → Network & internet → SIMs. Internet goes through the travel eSIM, while calls and texts stay on your US line.

Android, step 3. Turn on roaming

Settings Network & internet SIMs Travel eSIM
Roaming

This is how it looks on a Pixel. On a Samsung, turn on Data roaming for the travel eSIM in your phone’s network settings; names may differ by model. Roaming switched off on the eSIM is the most common reason for having no internet on arrival.

Frequently asked questions

How do I activate my eSIM on my iPhone?

Install it at home, and it activates when it first connects at your destination. Scan the QR code with the Camera app, tap Cellular Plan Detected, then Continue and Add Cellular Plan. On most of our plans the days start at that first connection.

Can I activate an eSIM by myself?

Yes. You need an unlocked phone that supports eSIM, a Wi-Fi connection and the QR code, link or manual details from your order. Everything happens in the phone’s own settings.

Why isn’t my eSIM activating on my iPhone?

Usually a setting on the travel line is off: make it your Cellular Data line and turn on Data Roaming for that line. Then turn on Airplane Mode for about 30 seconds, as Apple suggests, and work through the no-signal checklist. No data yet at home is normal on most of our plans: the days start only at the first connection at your destination.

How do I switch between my SIM and the eSIM on iPhone?

Open Settings, tap Cellular, then Cellular Data, and select the line you want. Your iPhone uses one cellular data network at a time. Calls and texts can stay on your US line.

How do I know if my phone supports eSIM?

Look for an option to add an eSIM in the SIM settings, or find the exact model in our phone list. Without eSIM support, the profile cannot be installed.

My phone supports eSIM, but the option isn't in the menu

Check the exact model and the version sold in the US in our phone list. A phone bought from a carrier may also be locked to it: ask your carrier whether it is unlocked.

Where is the option on my phone?

On a Samsung: Settings → Connections → SIM manager → Add eSIM. On a Pixel: Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → Add SIM. Menus can differ by model and software version, so look for the section by what it does.

What about other Android brands?

Menus differ from brand to brand and between system versions, and we do not list them model by model. Before you buy a plan, look for an option to add an eSIM in the SIM settings or find the exact model in our phone list.

In detail

In short

How to activate eSIM on iPhone starts at home: install your travel eSIM on Wi-Fi, scan the QR code with the Camera app and tap Add Cellular Plan. On 374 of the 379 plan families in our catalog, the days start only when the eSIM first connects at your destination (October 29, 2026).

This site is not affiliated with any carrier named on this page; we sell eSIMs. How we compare

You may not need an eSIM. If your carrier plan already includes data where you are going, stay on it and skip the install.

The bill trap is your US line. With both lines on, Apple warns: “You might still incur roaming fees from your home eSIM” (Apple).

Two checks come before any purchase: Is my phone unlocked? and Does my phone support eSIM?.

When to install: at home, before you fly

Install before departure, at home on Wi-Fi. Apple lists a Wi-Fi network or hotspot among what you need (checked on October 29, 2026, Apple: eSIM setup). Installing does not start the days on 374 of our 379 plan families.

Those plan families start their validity on the first connection to a network at the destination (our catalog snapshot, October 29, 2026). The other 5 start at installation: our Bosnia and Herzegovina, Mayotte and Suriname plans. Read the activation rule on your plan before you scan.

Each plan also has an install window, and the plan page shows it. Install at home, activate on arrival: if a step fails, you find out with Wi-Fi around and time to sort it out before the flight.

Keep the QR code on a second screen or on paper. The Camera route needs the code on another device; the tap-and-hold route below works on the same iPhone.

On iOS 26 or later, the iPhone might ask whether you plan to use a travel eSIM at home or while you travel. Apple says this can happen when you buy it before leaving (Apple: eSIM while traveling).

How to activate eSIM on iPhone depends on what your order gives you: a QR code, a link or details to type. The Camera and tap-and-hold routes both end at Add Cellular Plan (Apple, checked on October 29, 2026, Apple: eSIM setup).

What your order gives youSteps on iPhone, in Apple’s labels
A QR code on another screen or on paperOpen the Camera app and scan the code → tap the Cellular Plan Detected notification → Continue → Add Cellular Plan
A QR code in your default email app or browser, iOS 17.4 or laterTap and hold the code → Add eSIM → Continue → Add Cellular Plan

Details to typeSettings → Cellular → Add Cellular Plan → Enter Details Manually
A QR code while you set up a new iPhoneOn the Set Up Cellular screen, tap Use QR code

If the phone asks for a confirmation code, enter the one your order gives. Use the manual route only when your order email gives a manual activation code instead of a QR code.

Add eSIM appears in this flow only after you tap and hold a code. On Apple’s page, Settings → Cellular → Set Up Cellular or Add eSIM moves a number from another iPhone. It is not the way to add a travel plan; moving your own number has its own guide.

Apple lists these methods “depending on your carrier’s eSIM support”. Menus can differ by model and software version.

Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel: adding the eSIM

On a Galaxy, you add the eSIM in SIM manager; on a Pixel, in SIMs. Samsung adds a restart to apply the profile (Samsung and Google US support pages, checked on October 29, 2026).

PhoneAdd the eSIMThen
Samsung GalaxySettings → Connections → SIM manager → Add eSIM → Scan QR codeRestart the device to apply the eSIM profile (Samsung)
Google PixelSettings → Network & internet → SIMs → Add SIM → Set up an eSIMFollow the instructions on the screen (Google)

If an eSIM ready notification appears on a Galaxy instead, Samsung says to tap it, tap Add and restart. On a new Pixel, Google’s setup screens offer Download SIM → Set up for the same job.

Samsung warns that “Some carriers may not yet support the eSIM capabilities of your Galaxy device.” It adds: “Available screens and settings may vary by wireless service provider, software version, and device model.” Menus can differ by model and software version.

Label the line and choose which one uses data

After the install you hold two lines. Apple says “Your iPhone can use one cellular data network at a time” (checked on October 29, 2026, Apple: Dual SIM). Label the travel line now and move data to it when you land.

On iPhone, the label sits under Settings → Cellular → the travel line → Cellular Plan Label. Name it Travel, so you can tell the two lines apart at a baggage carousel. You pick the data line under Settings → Cellular → Cellular Data, and the table at the end has the Galaxy and Pixel labels.

Your US number stays on your main line for calls and texts. In our catalog, 371 of 379 plan families are data only and the other 8 include minutes for local calls only (October 29, 2026). Texts and 2FA codes on that number are covered in keep your US number.

When you land: data roaming for the travel line

When you land, make the travel line your data line and turn data roaming on for the eSIM line only. On iPhone, the switch is under Settings → Cellular → the travel line → Cellular Data Options (checked on October 29, 2026, Apple: Data Roaming).

On your US line, the Data Roaming switch is your choice: roaming there is billed under your carrier’s rules, so read them first.

On iOS 26 or later, a Turn On Travel eSIM notification can appear when you arrive with the travel eSIM installed. Tap it, choose Travel eSIM Only or Travel eSIM and Current eSIM, tap Continue, then pick Turn on Low Data Mode or Not Now. The dual SIM guide says which choice keeps your US number on.

On a Pixel, turn Roaming on under Settings → Network & internet → SIMs (Google: data roaming). Google adds that “Some carriers charge extra for data roaming”; that is about your US carrier’s bill, and our plans are prepaid.

On a Galaxy, Samsung’s US pages give no path to the roaming switch, so we print none. Both makers’ paths, and what to do on a Galaxy, are in turn data roaming on or off.
