What is data roaming? What the setting does, when to turn it on, and how not to pay twice
In short
Data roaming is the phone setting that lets cellular data use another carrier’s network outside your own. On a US line abroad it can cost money. Verizon says background data alone can start a $12/day TravelPass session outside Mexico and Canada (checked on October 29, 2026, Verizon TravelPass FAQs).

This site is not affiliated with any carrier named on this page; we sell eSIMs. How we compare
You may not need a travel eSIM. T-Mobile Experience Beyond includes up to 15GB of high-speed data abroad and Experience More up to 5GB (checked on October 29, 2026, T-Mobile international roaming). On those plans, keep data roaming on for the T-Mobile line and use its allowance.
Watch two bill traps. On AT&T and Verizon, a call you make or answer, or a text you send, can start a paid day even with data roaming off. Roaming charges can also reach your bill a billing cycle after you return, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) says.
What does data roaming mean?
Data roaming lets your phone send data over other carriers’ networks when you leave the area your carrier covers, Google says (Google: Pixel network settings). Google adds that “some carriers charge extra for data roaming” (checked on October 29, 2026, Google: data roaming).
Ask “what is data roaming?” and you can get three answers, because three different things get called “roaming”. Mixing them up is how people pay twice.
| What | Who controls it | Where you see it |
|---|---|---|
| The setting | You, on the phone | Cellular Data Options on iPhone, Roaming on Pixel |
| The charge | Your carrier | Its day pass, plan allowance or per-use rates |
| The data counter | The phone | Cellular on iPhone, SIMs on Pixel |
The setting decides whether the phone may use another network; your carrier’s rules decide what that use costs. The counter is the phone’s own estimate. Google says “some carriers measure usage differently”, so your bill follows the carrier’s count.
Does data roaming cost money?
Yes, on a US line it can. The FCC says that for most US customers, “domestic service plans do not cover usage abroad” (checked on October 29, 2026, FCC: international roaming).
What starts a charge depends on your carrier, so read yours before the flight.
| Carrier | What starts a charge |
|---|---|
| AT&T (postpaid) | With the International Day Pass on your line, the first data use, call (made or accepted) or text sent in an included destination starts a 24-hour session at $12/day (checked on October 29, 2026) |
| Verizon (postpaid) | A TravelPass session starts when you make or answer a call, send a text or use data, and background data counts; $12/day, $6 in Mexico and Canada (checked on October 29, 2026) |
| T-Mobile (postpaid) | Plans with data abroad include it: up to 15GB on Experience Beyond, up to 5GB on Experience More, then up to 256Kbps (checked on October 29, 2026) |

On AT&T and Verizon, data roaming off still leaves calls and texts as triggers, so it does not make the line silent. Full prices and destination lists live on the AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile pages.
How do you turn data roaming on or off?
Apple puts Data Roaming on the iPhone Cellular Data Options screen, under Settings → Cellular. On a Pixel, Google puts Roaming under Network & internet → SIMs; we found no confirmed official Samsung path (checked on October 29, 2026).

How do you use roaming with a travel eSIM and keep your US line quiet?
The setup: travel eSIM line roaming on, primary line roaming off, with the eSIM as your data line. Apple warns that even then, “you might still incur roaming fees from your home eSIM” (checked on October 29, 2026, Apple: two eSIMs on iPhone).
Apple says that if you use both lines, “your travel eSIM will be used for data”. That leaves the US line with calls and texts, which AT&T and Verizon still count as use.
A Reddit user in r/TravelHacks answered a Verizon customer whose travel eSIM data still triggered TravelPass. The answer, in one line: “You need to enable roaming on the eSIM and disable roaming on Verizon” (Reddit, July 2025). That is one user’s view, not a carrier rule, and it covers data only. The table adds the rest.
| Setting | Travel eSIM line | US line |
|---|---|---|
| Data Roaming | On | Off |
| Cellular Data (the data line) | Selected | Not selected |
| Calls and texts | None on most of our plans, which are data only | On AT&T and Verizon, a call you make or answer, or a text you send, can start a paid day |
Your US number stays on your main line, and most of our plans are data only; check the plan’s calls/SMS fields. See the dual SIM guide for Apple’s steps to pick the eSIM as the data line and for Wi-Fi calling. Texts and 2FA codes are covered in keep your US number.
On most of our plans the days start when the eSIM first connects at your destination; check the activation rule shown on your plan.
If the eSIM line shows No Service or SOS only, Apple says to make sure Data Roaming is on for it. Apple’s other fixes for roaming issues abroad are Set Automatically under Date & Time and Airplane Mode for about 30 seconds. More in no signal on an eSIM.
Before you buy any travel eSIM, check Is my phone unlocked? and Does my phone support eSIM?. Then follow how to install an eSIM.
What does “current period roaming” mean?
“Current Period Roaming” is Apple’s label on the iPhone, and no Apple page we checked defines it (checked on October 29, 2026). The counter Apple does document sits under Settings → Cellular (or Cellular Data), “under the Cellular Data heading” (Apple: Data Roaming).
That counter is the phone’s own estimate, not your bill, so compare it with your carrier’s record afterward. On our plans, the remaining data shows on your order page.
If your phone shows roaming while you are at home, we cannot say why from official pages, so ask your carrier. Other terms on these screens are in the eSIM and roaming glossary.
Frequently asked questions
Do you want data roaming on or off?
On for the line that carries your data abroad, off for the line you want to keep quiet. With a travel eSIM, turn it on for the eSIM and off for your US line. Off stops background data from starting a day pass, but a call or text on an AT&T or Verizon line still can.
What happens if data roaming is on?
Your phone can use another carrier’s network, and on a US line abroad that can cost money. Verizon says background data can start a $12 TravelPass day, $6 in Mexico and Canada (checked on October 29, 2026). On a travel eSIM, turn it on as the plan’s install instructions say.
How do I avoid international charges on iPhone?
Turn off Data Roaming on your US line: Settings → Cellular, tap that line, then Cellular Data Options. Skip calls and texts on that line too, since AT&T and Verizon count them as use. With a travel eSIM as your data line, Apple warns you “might still incur roaming fees from your home eSIM”.
How do I turn on roaming on Android?
On a Pixel, open Settings → Network & internet → SIMs and turn Roaming on. We have no confirmed official Samsung path for the switch, so check Samsung’s support pages or ask your carrier. Google adds that “some carriers charge extra for data roaming”.
More setup answers are on eSIM help, and the carrier prices are in roaming by carrier.
