Google Fi international: what each plan includes abroad, 50 GB in 200+ destinations and when you need an eSIM
In short
Google Fi Unlimited Premium includes 50 GB of high-speed data in 200+ destinations, then 256 kbps. Flexible charges $10 per GB, and Standard covers only Canada and Mexico (checked on October 29, 2026, Google Fi international rates).
Information verified on October 29, 2026 at the official sources listed below. Carriers change prices and terms; your own plan decides what you pay.

This site is not affiliated with Google Fi; we sell eSIMs. How we compare
You may not need an eSIM. On Premium, a trip that stays inside the 50 GB is already covered, on your own number with no second line to set up. Stay on Fi then: here a travel eSIM does not win.
Two bill traps come first: Essentials has no calls, texts or data outside the US, and Standard works only in Canada and Mexico. Long stays carry a third, because Fi suspends data abroad after a warning. We compare public packages; check your own plan.
What does each Google Fi plan include abroad?
Unlimited Premium gives 50 GB of high-speed data in 200+ destinations, then 256 kbps, and Flexible bills $10 per GB there. Standard stops at Canada and Mexico; Essentials has nothing abroad (checked on October 29, 2026, Google Fi international rates).
| Fi plan | Data abroad | Calls abroad | Texts abroad |
|---|---|---|---|
| Unlimited Premium | 50 GB high-speed in 200+ destinations, then 256 kbps | 20¢/min on cellular; calls over Wi-Fi to the US, Canada and Mexico free | Free |
| Flexible | $10/GB in the US, Canada, Mexico and other covered destinations; high-speed up to 15 GB, then 256 kbps | 20¢/min on cellular; calls over Wi-Fi to the US, Canada and Mexico free | Free |
| Unlimited Standard | Canada and Mexico only; other countries “Not available” | Canada and Mexico only | Canada and Mexico only |
| Unlimited Essentials | Does not work outside the US | Does not work outside the US | Does not work outside the US |
Fi’s footnote sets two limits on data abroad. Flexible gets high-speed data “up to 15 GB/person,” and on both plans “Data counts towards your monthly high-speed data usage.” The Standard and Essentials rows come from Fi’s rates help page.
The Flexible plan bills through Bill Protection. Fi’s plans page says data used “in the United States and any other covered country or territory qualifies.” On a one-person plan, someone who has used 10 GB will “never pay more than $60 for data” (checked on October 30, 2026, Google Fi plans).
Fi’s two pages give different 5G counts for international roaming on Fi, so we give none.
When does a Fi customer actually need a travel eSIM?
A Fi customer needs a travel eSIM on Standard or Essentials outside Canada and Mexico, where Fi gives no service. On Flexible, our plans of the same size cost less (our arithmetic, checked on October 29, 2026, Fi plan comparison).
Before you compare, check your phone: Is my phone unlocked? and Does my phone support eSIM?. The Fi column is our arithmetic for one person on Flexible: $10 per GB until Bill Protection caps the data charge. Our plans in the table are data only.
| Trip | Google Fi | Our plan, data only |
|---|---|---|
| Any trip within 50 GB, Premium | $0 extra: data abroad included up to 50 GB, then 256 kbps | Not needed: the row where we do not win |
| 3 GB in Europe, Flexible | Up to $30 (3 GB × $10, our arithmetic) | $8.99 for 3GB, 30 days (Europe eSIM) |
| 10 GB in Europe, Flexible | Up to $60 for data (Bill Protection, one person) | $18.99 for 10GB, 30 days |
| 10 GB in Japan, Flexible | Up to $60 for data (Bill Protection, one person) | $14.99 for 10GB, 30 days (Japan eSIM) |
| 20 GB in Japan, Flexible | Up to $60 for data, but high-speed only up to 15 GB, then 256 kbps | $22.99 for 20GB, 30 days |
| Europe, Standard or Essentials | No service: Standard covers only Canada and Mexico, Essentials nothing abroad | about $1.90 per GB on the 10GB, 30-day plan |
Fi’s own page says: “You cannot activate Fi for the first time while abroad.” Its terms ask you to use Fi “mainly in the United States (not including territories) for at least one day before using Google Fi abroad” (Google Fi international rates).
Long stays abroad on Google Fi
Fi’s help says “An extended period of use outside the US, typically 50 days, triggers a warning.” Your international data “is suspended 30 days after this email” (checked on October 29, 2026, How to use Google Fi outside of the US).
Fi’s rates page adds that data abroad is “Not intended for international use over 90 consecutive days” (Google Fi international rates). After a suspension “you can still call and text.” Data abroad returns only after you “use significant data in the US for at least 30 days.”
This matters for family visits and a semester abroad. Past the warning, a travel eSIM can carry your data while your Fi number keeps calls and texts. Set it up as in the eSIM section.

Canada and Mexico are covered on Standard, Premium and Flexible. Outside your plan’s coverage, Fi says “you will need to get a local SIM card for that country for cellular coverage.”
The list also names US territories, among them Guam, American Samoa and the US Virgin Islands. Check your plan before a trip there.
Google Fi in Japan
Premium gives 50 GB of high-speed data in Japan, then 256 kbps, and Flexible bills $10 per GB. Japan is on Fi’s 200+ list (checked on October 29, 2026, Google Fi international rates).
Standard and Essentials have no service in Japan. On those lines, compare the options in SIM cards for Japan; our Japan plans are in the cost table.
eSIM on Google Fi and a travel eSIM next to your line
Fi sells no travel eSIM: roaming is built into Premium and Flexible. On iPhone, Fi says “you can’t transfer eSIM between iPhones in Apple Settings” (checked on October 29, 2026, Fi eSIM help).
Fi’s page adds that you transfer and configure the eSIM “through the Google Fi app on iPhone and iPad.” On Android, the same page has you download the Google Fi app and follow its on-screen steps to activate.
Apple’s page says: “You can have two eSIMs active at the same time on supported iPhone models.” With both lines on, “your travel eSIM will be used for data.” Apple adds: “You might still incur roaming fees from your home eSIM” (checked on October 29, 2026, Apple).
On a Pixel, Google lists two conditions for two eSIM profiles: “You have a Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro, or later phone” and “Your carrier allows this feature.” We found no Fi statement on that, so ask Fi (Google Pixel help).
So set the travel eSIM as the data line and turn off data roaming on the Fi line (dual SIM, data roaming). Your number stays on the main line for 2FA codes and app verification (keep your US number).

Frequently asked questions
Is Google Fi international?
Yes, on Premium and Flexible, which work in 200+ destinations. Unlimited Premium includes 50 GB of high-speed data abroad, then 256 kbps, and Flexible bills $10 per GB. Standard covers only Canada and Mexico, and Essentials has no service outside the US (checked on October 29, 2026).
When traveling, should I turn data roaming on or off with Google Fi?
Off on the Fi line if a travel eSIM carries your data, since Apple says you “might still incur roaming fees from your home eSIM.” If Fi carries your data on Premium or Flexible, check Fi’s help before you leave: we found no Fi page with menu steps. Steps for your phone are on our data roaming page.
Does Google Fi work in Japan?

Is Google Fi cheaper than a travel eSIM?
On Premium, yes: a trip within the 50 GB costs nothing extra. On Flexible, no: 10 GB costs one person up to $60 on Fi and $18.99 on our Europe 10GB, 30-day plan, data only (our arithmetic). On Standard or Essentials outside Canada and Mexico, Fi gives no service.
