Does T-Mobile work in Japan? Yes — how much fast data each plan gets, and when to add a Japan eSIM

In short

Yes. T-Mobile Experience Beyond gets up to 15GB of high-speed data in Japan, More up to 5GB, then up to 256Kbps. Essentials needs a Pass: $10 for 2GB for up to 24 hours (checked on October 29, 2026, T-Mobile international roaming).

Information verified on October 29, 2026 at the official sources listed below. Carriers change prices and terms; your own plan decides what you pay.

This site is not affiliated with T-Mobile; we sell eSIMs. How we compare

You may not need an eSIM. A trip that stays inside the included high-speed data, 15GB on Beyond or 5GB on More, adds nothing to your bill for data. You keep the same number, too.

Two bill traps: on Essentials, a trip with no Pass means no data in Japan, and a Pass with no start date starts at once. We compare public packages; check your own plan.

How much high-speed data does your T-Mobile plan get in Japan?

Japan is on T-Mobile’s Simple Global list of 215+ countries and destinations, so plan data works there on arrival. Beyond gets up to 15GB of high-speed data, More up to 5GB, and Essentials none without a Pass (checked on October 29, 2026, T-Mobile international roaming).

Experience BeyondUp to 15GBUp to 256Kbps$0
Experience MoreUp to 5GBUp to 256Kbps$0
Essentials 2.0, Essentials Saver 2.0None without an International PassWith a Pass: the Pass’s data first, then up to 128Kbps until it endsInternational Pass from $10

Texting is included on all three. Calls are charged per minute; T-Mobile’s roaming page and plan terms disagree on the rate, so we print neither (T-Mobile plans).

Beyond also includes T-Satellite, texting and select apps by satellite, in select countries that include Japan. It needs a compatible device and a view of the sky; other plans pay $10 a month for it (T-Mobile international roaming). The T-Mobile roaming page has the plan-by-plan detail and the full country list.

Is 256Kbps enough after the allowance runs out?

On T-Mobile in Japan, Beyond and More keep data going at up to 256Kbps once the high-speed data is used (checked on October 29, 2026). We have not tested that speed, so we make no claim about what it handles.

Judge the data speed in Japan against your own habits: your phone’s cellular data screen shows how much a normal week at home uses. Over 14 days, Beyond’s 15GB is about 1GB a day, More’s 5GB a third of that (our arithmetic).

On Essentials, a Pass’s high-speed data comes first, then up to 128Kbps until the Pass ends (T-Mobile International Pass).

International Pass or a Japan eSIM for a 1–3 week trip?

On Essentials, 14 days on an International Pass for Japan cost at least $75 for 30GB, our arithmetic (checked on October 29, 2026, T-Mobile International Pass). T-Mobile’s Passes cost $10 for 2GB (up to 24 hours), $50 for 15GB (up to 10 days) and $75 for 30GB (up to 30 days).

A 10-day Pass plus four 24-hour Passes comes to $90 for the same trip, so one 30-day Pass costs less, our arithmetic. For one week, a 10-day Pass covers it at $50 for 15GB.

More, 5GB is enough$0 extra, up to 5GBNone needed
More, you want 10GBUp to 256Kbps after 5GB$14.99, 10GB, 30 days
Essentials, up to 30GB$75, 30GB, one 30-day Pass, free calls$14.99, 10GB, 30 days, or $22.99, 20GB, 30 days
Essentials, more than 30GBUp to 128Kbps after the Pass’s 30GB, until it endsUnlimited — 3 GB/day at full speed, then reduced to 1 Mbps, 15 days, $47.99

At 3 GB a day, 14 days come to up to 42GB at full speed, our arithmetic. For three weeks the Essentials total stays at $75, because one 30-day Pass still covers the trip.

The products differ, too. The Pass puts 30GB and free calls on your T-Mobile number, and T-Mobile says its data works as a hotspot. Ours is data only, with no calls; the plan doesn’t state a hotspot rule — check the plan page.

For scale, we checked 11 travel-eSIM sellers from a US IP on October 29, 2026. Half of their 155 prices for 10GB over 30 days, across 29 destinations, fell between $16.00 and $25.00.

Keep your T-Mobile number and use a Japan eSIM for data

Our Japan plan is data only, so your US number stays on your T-Mobile line for 2FA codes and texts. A US iPhone 14 or later has no SIM tray: a travel plan is a second eSIM (checked on October 29, 2026, Apple).

Apple says you can have two eSIMs active at the same time on supported iPhone models. With both lines on in the iOS 26 travel setup, “your travel eSIM will be used for data.” Apple adds: “You might still incur roaming fees from your home eSIM” (checked on October 29, 2026, Apple: two eSIMs).

If the Japan eSIM is your data line, turn data roaming off on the T-Mobile line (turn data roaming on or off). Dual SIM has the steps, and how to install an eSIM covers the install.

Our Japan plan uses the , and Rakuten networks, listed as 5G in Japan. It covers the whole country, including Okinawa and Hokkaido, and its days start when the eSIM first connects there. Install it at home before you fly; the install window is shown on the plan page.

T-Mobile does not name its Japanese roaming partner on the pages we checked, so we make no network comparison. For pocket Wi-Fi and every other way to connect in Japan, see SIM cards for Japan. Roaming or eSIM puts carriers and eSIMs side by side.

About 3.1 million US residents flew to Japan in 2025 (NTTO, Survey of International Air Travelers, 2025). The U.S. Department of State rates Japan Level 1: “Exercise Normal Precautions” (updated May 14, 2025, travel.state.gov).

To add data before you go, our Japan plans list every size and price, data only.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use my US cell phone in Japan?

Yes. T-Mobile counts Japan among its 215+ countries and destinations: Beyond and More get high-speed data there, Essentials needs a Pass (checked on October 29, 2026). An unlocked phone can also take a Japan eSIM for data.

Do I need to tell T-Mobile before a trip to Japan?

No, not on qualifying plans: “No setup required,” T-Mobile’s roaming page says. On Essentials, buy an International Pass in T-Life or My T-Mobile before you go and pick its start date. Without a date, the Pass starts at once.

How do I call Japan with T-Mobile?

Per minute, unless an International Pass is running. T-Mobile’s roaming page and its plan terms print different per-minute rates, so we print neither (checked on October 29, 2026). A Pass includes free calls while it runs; check your plan before you dial.
