Does Verizon work in Mexico and Canada? Yes on many Verizon plans — what each plan includes
In short
“Calling, texting and data use in Mexico and Canada are included at no extra cost with our Unlimited mobile plans,” Verizon says. Other plans pay $6 a day with TravelPass (checked on October 29, 2026, Verizon TravelPass FAQs).

This site is not affiliated with Verizon; we sell eSIMs. How we compare
You may not need an eSIM. Does Verizon work in Mexico and Canada at no extra cost? On Verizon Unlimited, Simplicity or Prepaid $45 15 GB, $60 or $70, yes for a normal trip: stay on Verizon, same number, no second line.
Two bill traps come first: on a line that pays by the day, background data can start a $6 day on its own. With no pass and no included plan, calls cost $0.99 a minute and data $2.05 per MB. We compare public packages; check your own plan.
Which Verizon plans include Mexico and Canada?
Verizon Unlimited plans and Simplicity include talk, text and data in Mexico and Canada. So do Verizon Prepaid’s $45 15 GB, $60 and $70 plans; other lines pay $6 a day (checked on October 29, 2026, Verizon TravelPass FAQs).
| Verizon plan | Postpaid or prepaid | Mexico and Canada | Price there | High-speed data there |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Verizon Unlimited plans | Postpaid | Included | $0 extra, 50% rule below | Check your plan |
| Simplicity | Postpaid | Included | $0 extra, 50% rule below | 2 GB, then 3G speeds |
| $45 15 GB | Prepaid | Included | $0/line per day | Check your plan |
| Verizon Prepaid $60 Unlimited | Prepaid | Included | $0/line per day | Check your plan |
| $70 Unlimited Plus | Prepaid | Included | $0/line per day | Check your plan |
| $35 Talk & Text | Prepaid | Prepaid TravelPass | $6/line per day | 5 GB a day, then 3G |
| Other postpaid plans | Postpaid | TravelPass | $6/day | 5 GB a session, then 3G |
The plan name on your bill decides the row, so check your plan before you go. Simplicity’s 2 GB comes from Verizon’s Simplicity FAQs, which state no period for it.
What do other Verizon plans pay in Mexico and Canada?
TravelPass for Mexico and Canada costs $6 a day, against $12 in other TravelPass countries, and you pay only for days of use. Each 24-hour session gives 5 GB of high-speed data, then reduced speeds (3G) (checked on October 29, 2026, Verizon TravelPass FAQs).
A session starts when you “make or answer a phone call, send a text or use data” in Mexico or Canada, Verizon says. Verizon then texts you the time it ends, and using the phone after that starts a new session.
Background data counts too. Once cellular data or data roaming is on, app refreshes such as weather and fitness apps, email syncing and software updates can start a session. Keep both off until you need them.
Past 5 GB, Verizon offers 2 GB more high-speed data for $5 in Mexico and Canada ($10 elsewhere). You can buy it more than once in a session.
With no TravelPass and no included plan, Verizon bills per use (Verizon international pricing). Calls in Mexico and Canada cost $0.99 a minute and data $2.05 per MB, so 5 MB comes to $10.25 (our arithmetic).
Verizon’s International Monthly Plan costs “$100/mo per line”, “Plus taxes and fees” (Verizon International Monthly Plan). Verizon calls it “Perfect for trips of 9 days or more”: 20GB of high-speed data, then 3G, with 250 minutes.
What is Verizon’s 50% usage rule for long stays?
If more than 50% of your talk, text or data usage in a 60-day period is abroad, Verizon may remove or limit it (Verizon). Its pages disagree on where: Canada or Mexico, or any country other than the US (checked on October 29, 2026).
| Where Verizon says it | Wording |
|---|---|
| TravelPass FAQs; “Other plan details” on Important Plan Information | “If more than 50% of your talk, text or data usage in a 60-day period is in Canada or Mexico, use of those services in those countries may be removed or limited.” |
| Important Plan Information, in entries such as Simplicity and Unlimited Ultimate | “If more than 50% of your talk, text or data usage in a 60-day period is in countries other than the United States, use of those services in those countries may be removed or limited.” |
The figures match; the places do not. We found no Verizon page that says which wording applies to your line. We give no verdict: check your plan with Verizon before a long stay.
A 5-week family visit is 35 of 60 days, or 58% of the days (our arithmetic). The rule counts usage, not days, and Verizon gives no day count, so we give none.
If you will spend most of two months in Mexico or Canada, ask Verizon what your line allows. Data on a travel eSIM runs on another network, not your Verizon line; calls and texts on your Verizon number still count as Verizon usage.
Verizon Prepaid in Mexico and Canada
Verizon Prepaid prints “$0/line per day in Mexico and Canada with 15 GB, Unlimited and Unlimited Plus plans.” The $35 Talk & Text plan pays $6/line per day with Prepaid TravelPass (checked on October 29, 2026, Verizon Prepaid TravelPass).
Prepaid plans with Mexico and Canada need no pass. Prepaid TravelPass is charged from your balance and gives 5 GB of daily high-speed data, then 3G. Verizon says it “isn’t available with prepaid data only plans” (Verizon Prepaid TravelPass FAQs).
Prepaid TravelPass also charges $6/line per day in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, while postpaid lines are billed there as at home. The Verizon page covers the territories.
When an eSIM makes sense for Mexico or Canada
Three TravelPass days in Mexico cost $18 (our arithmetic); our 10 GB, 30-day Mexico plan costs $17.99, data only. On a plan with Mexico and Canada included, an eSIM does not win on a normal trip.
Before you buy, check that your phone can take one: Is my phone unlocked? and Does my phone support eSIM?
| Trip length | TravelPass at $6 a day (our arithmetic) | Verizon International Monthly Plan | Our Mexico plan: 10 GB, 30 days, data only | Our Canada plan: 10 GB, 30 days, data only |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3 days | $18 | $100 | $17.99 | $25.99 |
| 7 days | $42 | $100 | $17.99 | $25.99 |
| 14 days | $84 | $100 | $17.99 | $25.99 |
| 30 days | $180 | $100 | $17.99 | $25.99 |
| Mexico and Canada included on your plan | $0 | Not needed | An eSIM does not win | An eSIM does not win |
TravelPass and the Monthly Plan keep calls and texts on your Verizon number. TravelPass gives 5 GB of high-speed data a session, the Monthly Plan 20GB for the month, then both drop to 3G. Our Mexico and Canada plans are data only; our Mexico plan also comes in 20 GB for 30 days at $30.99.
Our Mexico plan runs on
Movistar 4G and our Canada plan on
Bell 4G, both data only (our catalog, checked on October 29, 2026). Set the eSIM as the data line and turn off data roaming on the Verizon line (dual SIM, data roaming). Keep the Verizon line on so your number still gets 2FA codes and texts.
On a line that pays by the day, an eSIM replaces the data, not the calls. Verizon starts a $6 session when you “make or answer a phone call, send a text or use data”. With two numbers on one phone, “charges apply per the international plan associated with each line,” Verizon says.
If your phone shows no signal in Mexico or Canada, start with no signal fixes. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) advises asking your carrier about international roaming rates before you travel.
For your trip, pick a country: Mexico or Canada, with the guides Mexico SIM card and Canada SIM card. Roaming or eSIM compares carriers, and Verizon abroad covers every other destination. Ships follow separate rules: see cruises.
Frequently asked questions
Is Mexico included in my Verizon plan?
Yes, on Verizon Unlimited plans and Simplicity, and on the Prepaid $45 15 GB, $60 and $70 plans. On Prepaid $35 Talk & Text and other plans, TravelPass costs $6 a day in Mexico (checked on October 29, 2026). Your plan name decides which applies, so check your plan.
Do I need to do anything with Verizon when I go to Mexico?
Check your plan first. On a line that pays by the day, a call you make or answer, a text you send or data use starts a $6 TravelPass session. With cellular data or data roaming on, background data counts too, so turn them on only when you need them.
Can I use my Verizon phone in Mexico without extra charges?
Yes, if your plan includes Mexico, within a 50% rule: Verizon may limit service if most of your usage over 60 days is abroad (Verizon). Its pages disagree on where that is, Canada or Mexico or any country other than the US. Without an included plan or TravelPass, calls cost $0.99 a minute and data $2.05 per MB.
Will my Verizon phone work in Canada?
Yes, on the same terms as Mexico. Verizon Unlimited plans, Simplicity and Prepaid $45 15 GB, $60 and $70 include Canada; other plans pay $6 a day with TravelPass (checked on October 29, 2026). TravelPass gives 5 GB of high-speed data a session, then 3G.
