Best eSIM for Japan? How an eSIM, pocket Wi-Fi, a SIM card and your US carrier compare

In short

There is no single best eSIM for Japan: the right one depends on your days and data. Our Japan plan is data only, 10GB for 30 days at $14.99 (checked on October 29, 2026). On postpaid plans, AT&T’s Day Pass and Verizon’s TravelPass cost $12 a day in Japan, so seven days come to $84 (our arithmetic).

Information verified on October 29, 2026 at the official sources listed below. Carriers change prices and terms; your own plan decides what you pay.

This site is not affiliated with any carrier named on this page; we sell eSIMs. How we compare

You may not need an eSIM. T-Mobile Experience Beyond and More, AT&T Elite 2.0, Google Fi Unlimited Premium and Xfinity Mobile Plus and Select already include high-speed data in Japan. If your trip fits inside that allowance, stay on your carrier: same number, nothing to install.

Verizon Unlimited Ultimate prints no country list, so ask Verizon about Japan.

Three bill traps come first. Without a pass, AT&T bills data at $2.05 per MB (AT&T pay-per-use rates). On Verizon, a call you make or answer, a text or background data can start a $12 TravelPass day (Verizon TravelPass FAQs).

On T-Mobile, an International Pass with no start date starts at once (T-Mobile International Pass). We compare public packages; check your own plan.

Will your US phone work in Japan? Carrier by carrier

Yes, on most plans. Japan is on the published lists of AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, Google Fi and seven smaller carriers, not on Cricket’s (checked on October 29, 2026).

How we compared the ways to get data in Japan

On October 29, 2026, we ran a dated comparison of four ways to get data in Japan: carrier pass, plan data, pocket Wi-Fi, eSIM. The criteria are price for your trip length, data, network and what your phone needs.

Here, “best eSIM for Japan” is a method, not a ranking: the same four criteria, the same trip, a date on every figure. We name no sellers and rank none.

The market gives the scale. We checked 155 prices for 10GB over 30 days from 11 travel-eSIM sellers, from a US IP on October 29, 2026. The middle half ran from $16.00 to $25.00, and the middle price across 29 destinations was $19.00.

For 20GB over 30 days, the middle half of 144 prices ran from $21.00 to $37.80, with a middle price of $27.25. Our methodology sets the rules: public packages, one check date, our arithmetic labeled.

The table prices carrier roaming in Japan for one phone on a land trip, our arithmetic. AT&T’s cruise page says you pay for at most 10 Day Pass days in one billing cycle (checked on October 29, 2026, AT&T). A 14-day trip that spans two cycles can be billed for all 14 days.

One phone in Japan, our arithmetic7-day trip14-day trip
AT&T Day Pass, postpaid$84$120 if all 14 days fall in one billing cycle; up to $168 if they span two
Verizon TravelPass, postpaid$84$168
Verizon International Monthly Plan$100$100
T-Mobile Experience Beyond or More$0 inside 15GB or 5GB$0 inside 15GB or 5GB
T-Mobile Essentials with an International Pass$50, one 10-day Pass, 15GB$75, one 30-day Pass, 30GB
Google Fi Unlimited Premium$0 inside 50 GB$0 inside 50 GB
Our Japan plan, 10GB, 30 days, data only$14.99$14.99
Our Japan plan, 20GB, 30 days, data only$22.99$22.99

Verizon calls its Monthly Plan “Perfect for trips of 9 days or more.” It costs $100/mo per line, with 20GB at high speed, then 3G (checked on October 29, 2026, Verizon). T-Mobile’s Passes are $50 for 15GB for up to 10 days and $75 for 30GB (checked on October 29, 2026, T-Mobile).

Where an eSIM does not win: plans with included data. On Beyond, More, Elite 2.0, Xfinity Plus and Select or Fi Premium, a trip inside it costs nothing extra. On Google Fi, data abroad counts toward the same monthly high-speed data as home use (Google Fi).

The products differ, too. A carrier pass puts data, calls and texts on your own number. Ours is data only, and the plan doesn’t state a hotspot rule — check the plan page.

Roaming or eSIM runs the same check on your own trip.

Pocket Wi-Fi, a Japan SIM card or an eSIM?

Apple says iPhone 14 models or later “purchased in the United States can only be activated with an eSIM” (checked on October 29, 2026, Apple). So a Japan SIM card will not work in them; a pocket Wi-Fi rental is one more device to pick up, carry, charge and return.

Pocket Wi-Fi suits a traveler who wants no second profile on the phone. The trade-off is the device: a battery that has to last the day and a return you cannot forget. We have no checked rental prices or company terms, so we compare the trade-offs, not the cost.

An eSIM puts data on the phone itself, with nothing to carry or return; each traveler’s phone needs its own plan. We sell no physical SIM cards. Do iPhones have SIM cards? covers the tray question in full.

What our Japan plan covers

Our Japan plan runs on , and Rakuten, each listed as 5G, and covers all of Japan, Okinawa and Hokkaido included. It is data only (plan details as of October 29, 2026).

Its days start at the first connection to a network in Japan, not at purchase. Docomo is not among the three networks, and we have no coverage comparison between them, so we claim no network over another.

How much data for one or two weeks in Japan

Start from your own use: the cellular data screen in your phone’s settings shows what a typical week at home takes. Over 14 days, 10GB is about 0.71GB a day and 20GB about 1.43GB a day (our arithmetic).

For one week of light use, our 1GB plan for 7 days at $3.99 is about 0.14GB a day, data only (our arithmetic). Fixed GB plans for 30 days suit a trip of uneven days, since a heavy day borrows from a quiet one.

For heavier use, our 15-day plan is Unlimited — 3 GB/day at full speed, then reduced to 1 Mbps — at $47.99, data only. That allows up to 45GB at full speed over 15 days (our arithmetic).

We checked 11 travel-eSIM sellers on October 29, 2026. Every limit stated on their country pages was 3 to 5 GB a day at full speed, then about 1 Mbps. Daily limits on eSIM plans explains the wording.

We give no GB verdict here. How much data do I need? walks through maps, messaging and video use.

Before you go: unlocked phone, install at home, your US number

Three checks come before you buy any eSIM: an unlocked phone, an install at home, and a plan for your US number. Apple says that to use another carrier abroad, “your iPhone cannot be locked to a carrier” (checked on October 29, 2026, Apple).

Only your current carrier can unlock an iPhone, Apple’s unlock page says, so ask before the trip (Apple). Install the eSIM at home on Wi-Fi; the install window is shown on the plan page, and how to install an eSIM has the steps.

With two lines on, Apple says your travel eSIM carries the data, and “You might still incur roaming fees from your home eSIM” (Apple). Turn data roaming off on the US line: data roaming shows how, and Dual SIM covers the line setup. That switch covers data only: a call or text on the US line can still start a $12 AT&T or Verizon day.

Your US number stays on the home line for texts and 2FA codes; keep your US number explains what still reaches you.

About 3.1 million US residents flew to Japan in 2025, up 33.6% (NTTO, Survey of International Air Travelers, 2025). The U.S. Department of State rates Japan Level 1: “Exercise Normal Precautions” (updated May 14, 2025, travel.state.gov).

Check before you fly

What if the eSIM doesn’t work when you land in Japan?

Check four settings, in this order, before you write to us.

The first is the line for cellular data. In the phone’s SIM settings, pick the travel line for cellular data; your US line stays on for calls and texts, with its cellular data off.

The second is data roaming, for the eSIM line only. The eSIM is a foreign profile, so the phone treats Japan as roaming for it.

The third is the APN. The plan does not set it by itself here: add wbdata on Android under the eSIM line’s cellular network settings.

The fourth is a restart. Restart the phone or switch Airplane Mode on and off, and let it find SoftBank and KDDI; this can take a few minutes after you leave the plane.

Still no data? Write to us on WhatsApp or at support@esimworld.us with your order number, or go through the no-signal checklist. Do not delete the eSIM to “try again”: a deleted profile usually cannot be installed twice from the same code. If the eSIM doesn't work and it isn't your phone's fault, we refund the payment whether or not it was installed.

What I’d choose (and when NOT to buy the eSIM)

For a week of maps, rides and messaging I’d take 1 GB for 7 days, $3.99. For two weeks or more, with photos and social media, I’d go for 5 GB for 30 days, $9.99. If you video-call and stream every day, take the unlimited plan for 7 days, $23.99, with 3 GB a day at full speed, then reduced to 1 Mbps.

I would not recommend the eSIM in three cases. If your US plan already includes Japan and its limit is enough for you, roaming costs you nothing extra and keeps your number (compare the carriers). If your phone has no eSIM or is locked to your carrier, it cannot take the plan: check if your phone is unlocked. And if your group travels together all day and shares one connection, a pocket Wi-Fi can cover everyone.

Frequently asked questions

Which eSIM provider is best for Japan?

None wins every trip, so we name no single best eSIM for Japan and rank no sellers. We compare four ways by price for the trip length, data, network and phone needs, checked on October 29, 2026. Plan data such as T-Mobile Experience Beyond’s 15GB costs nothing extra inside its allowance. Seven days on an AT&T or Verizon postpaid pass come to $84 (our arithmetic).

Is 20GB enough for 2 weeks in Japan?

It depends on your use, and our data guide turns a typical week at home into a figure for your trip.

Is pocket Wi-Fi or an eSIM better in Japan?

Neither wins for everyone. Pocket Wi-Fi is one more device to carry, charge and return; an eSIM puts data on the phone itself, with nothing to return. We have no checked pocket Wi-Fi prices, so we compare the trade-offs, not the cost.

Can I get a Japan eSIM with a phone number?

Not from us. Our Japan plan is data only, with no Japanese number and no calls or texts of its own. Your US number stays on your home line for texts and 2FA codes.
