Does my phone work in the Dominican Republic, Jamaica or the Bahamas? Carrier passes vs an eSIM
In short
AT&T Elite 2.0 and Premium 2.0 include the Dominican Republic at no charge. Where your plan has no data abroad, AT&T’s Day Pass and Verizon’s TravelPass cost $12 a day there, in Jamaica and in the Bahamas (checked on October 29, 2026).
Information verified on October 29, 2026 at the official sources listed below. Carriers change prices and terms; your own plan decides what you pay.
On this page
This site is not affiliated with any carrier named on this page; we sell eSIMs. How we compare
You may not need an eSIM. T-Mobile Experience Beyond and More, AT&T Elite 2.0 and Google Fi Unlimited Premium list all three islands with high-speed data included, up to each allowance. Verizon Unlimited Ultimate includes 15 GB in 210+ destinations but publishes no country list.
On a one-day stop, a $12 pass also beats a 3 GB plan at the market’s middle price (our arithmetic, below). It keeps calls and texts on your number, too.
Watch the bill traps. With no pass, Verizon bills $2.05 per MB and $1.79 a minute in all three countries (Verizon rates). AT&T’s data rate without a pass is also $2.05 per MB (AT&T pay-per-use rates).
On Verizon, background data, a call you make or answer or a text you send can open a $12 TravelPass day (Verizon TravelPass FAQs). AT&T starts a 24-hour Day Pass at your first data use, text or call in a listed destination (AT&T Day Pass).
We compare public packages; check your own plan.
Does your US phone work in the Caribbean? Carrier by carrier
Yes, on most US plans. Every pass and plan-data list below that names countries includes the three islands, with one gap (checked on October 29, 2026). US Mobile’s Light Speed network leaves out the Dominican Republic.
AT&T’s no-charge Latin America list and Google Fi’s 5G list name only the Dominican Republic. Mint and Verizon Prepaid show their countries only in a search box, and Straight Talk publishes no list.
Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands are left out here. AT&T and Verizon postpaid bill them as home, but Verizon Prepaid charges $6 a day there, so check your plan.

Buying an eSIM instead? It sits next to your US line only on an unlocked phone, so run Is my phone unlocked? and Does my phone support eSIM? first.
Dominican Republic
Does my phone work in the Dominican Republic with no pass? Yes on AT&T Elite 2.0 and Premium 2.0, at no charge, and within the allowance of the plans above that include data there (checked on October 29, 2026, AT&T Latin America).
AT&T counts the country among its 20 Latin American countries and adds: “International usage should not exceed domestic.”
Our Dominican Republic plan is data only and runs on Altice 4G: 1 GB for 7 days is $5.99, 5 GB for 30 days $17.99. The country is not on our Caribbean regional plan’s list, so this country plan is the one that covers it.
About 3.26 million US residents flew to the Dominican Republic in 2025 (NTTO, Survey of International Air Travelers, air travel only, SIAT 2025). Winter is the peak season there, as in Jamaica and the Bahamas (NTTO, 2025).
In the Dominican Republic, the middle price was $16.20 for a 3 GB plan and $32 for 10 GB, both over 30 days. That comes from 11 travel-eSIM sellers we checked from a US IP on October 29, 2026.
The U.S. Department of State rates the Dominican Republic Level 2: “Exercise Increased Caution” (updated June 11, 2025, travel.state.gov). Prices and install window: Dominican Republic eSIM plans.
Jamaica
Jamaica is on AT&T’s Day Pass list at $12 a day and on its Elite 2.0 list, inside the 20GB (checked on October 29, 2026, Day Pass list; Elite 2.0 list checked on October 30, 2026). AT&T’s Latin America page says “the rest of the Caribbean are not included”, so Premium 2.0 lines pay the Day Pass there.
Our Jamaica plan is data only and joins Digicel or Flow 4G, whichever is available. It costs $7.99 for 1 GB over 7 days and $19.99 for 3 GB over 30 days. On Android its APN is entered by hand: wbdata.
About 1.5 million US residents flew to Jamaica in 2025 (NTTO, air travel only). Sellers’ middle prices there were $17.50 for 3 GB and $35 for 10 GB over 30 days (October 29, 2026).
Without a pass, a megabyte in Jamaica costs $0.03 on Spectrum’s rate table and $2.05 on Verizon’s (checked on October 29, 2026, Spectrum, Verizon). Look up your own carrier’s rate before you land.
The U.S. Department of State rates Jamaica Level 2: “Exercise Increased Caution” (updated June 22, 2026, travel.state.gov). Plan details: Jamaica eSIM plans.
The Bahamas
Verizon’s rate page lists the Bahamas twice, as “Bahamas” and “Grand Bahamas” (checked on October 29, 2026, Verizon rates). Both rows show TravelPass at $12 a day and the Monthly Plan at $100.
Unlimited Ultimate’s 15 GB comes with no country list, so ask Verizon about the Bahamas before you count on it. More for Verizon customers: Verizon in the Bahamas. AT&T treats the Bahamas as it does Jamaica: the $12 Day Pass, Elite 2.0’s 20GB, and no inclusion on Premium 2.0.
Our Bahamas plan is data only on Aliv 4G: 1 GB for 7 days is $6.99, 3 GB for 30 days $15.99. Its largest plan is 5 GB for 30 days, so for a long, data-heavy stay compare your carrier’s allowance first.
The market’s middle prices there were $17.50 for 3 GB and $36 for 10 GB (October 29, 2026). That 10 GB figure is the highest of the three islands.
The U.S. Department of State rates The Bahamas Level 2: “Exercise Increased Caution” (updated July 27, 2026, travel.state.gov). Plan details: Bahamas eSIM plans.
Why Caribbean data costs more, and when a pass is the better deal
Caribbean data costs two to three times what Europe does across the 11 travel-eSIM sellers we checked on October 29, 2026. The 3 GB middle prices above, $16.20 to $17.50, compare with $6 in Spain. We name no seller and rank none.
That tilts the carrier pass vs eSIM math toward the pass on short stops. One $12 day costs less than any of the three 3 GB middle prices. Two days, at $24, cost more than all of them (our arithmetic).
| One phone, our arithmetic | 3 days | 7 days | 10 days |
|---|---|---|---|
| AT&T Day Pass or Verizon TravelPass, postpaid, $12 a day | $36 | $84 | $120 |
| Verizon International Monthly Plan, $100 a month | $100 | $100 | $100 |
| T-Mobile Essentials plus an International Pass | $30 (three 24-hour passes) | $50 (10-day Pass, 15GB) | $50 (10-day Pass, 15GB) |
| Visible (base) or Cricket, prepaid, $10 a day | $30 | $70 | $100 |
| Allowance on Beyond, More, Elite 2.0 or Fi Unlimited Premium | $0 within the allowance | $0 within the allowance | $0 within the allowance |
For trips over 10 days, AT&T’s cruise page says you pay for at most 10 days in one billing cycle (checked on October 29, 2026, AT&T). A trip that spans two cycles can be billed up to 10 days in each (our arithmetic).
Verizon’s TravelPass FAQs state no such cap. Verizon calls its Monthly Plan “Perfect for trips of 9 days or more” (Verizon).
An eSIM does not win inside an included allowance, which costs $0 extra, or against one $12 day at those middle prices. For a short stop, compare the pass with our 1 GB plans below.
Our island plans, data only, for the same trips:
| Island plan | 1 GB, 7 days | Larger plan, 30 days |
|---|---|---|
| Dominican Republic | $5.99 | 5 GB: $17.99 |
| Jamaica | $7.99 | 3 GB: $19.99 |
| Bahamas | $6.99 | 3 GB: $15.99 |
A carrier pass keeps your calls and texts on your own number; our plans carry data only. Roaming or eSIM runs this comparison for your own dates and carrier.
What our island plans share
All three island plans are data only, with no Caribbean number and no calls or texts of their own. Your US number stays on your main line. Each has a 365-day install window, and its days start at the first connection on the island (plan details as of October 29, 2026).
That timing lets you buy weeks ahead of a winter or spring break trip and install at home. The Dominican Republic and Bahamas plans each use one network, and the Jamaica plan two.
We make no claim about coverage at all-inclusive resorts, inland or on smaller islands. The plan doesn’t state a hotspot rule — check the plan page. How much data do I need? sizes a plan for maps, messaging and video.
Cruise port days in the Caribbean
An eSIM works in port, not at sea: out at sea your phone joins the ship’s network. AT&T and Verizon sell cruise passes for it at $20 a day (checked on October 29, 2026, Verizon cruise pass). AT&T bills a day spent at sea and on land as one $20 charge (AT&T Day Pass).
Our plans are per island, so check that each port’s island has one. Cruise connectivity covers the ship side and each carrier’s cruise pass.
Before you go: unlocked phone, home line, roaming switch
Apple says an iPhone used with another carrier abroad “cannot be locked to a carrier” (checked on October 29, 2026, Apple). Only your carrier can unlock it, and Apple notes it “might take the carrier a few days” (Apple).
A US iPhone 14 or later has no SIM tray: Apple says these models “can only be activated with an eSIM” (checked on October 29, 2026, Apple). A physical SIM card bought on the island is out on them.
Install the eSIM at home on Wi-Fi; the steps are in how to install an eSIM. Apple warns that with both lines on you “might still incur roaming fees from your home eSIM”.
Turning off data roaming on the US line (data roaming) does not stop calls and texts. A call made or answered, or a text sent, on an AT&T or Verizon line can still start a $12 day. Keep your US number covers texts and 2FA codes while you travel.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best SIM card for tourists in the Dominican Republic?
We rank none. A physical SIM card is not an option on a US iPhone 14 or later: Apple says those models activate only with an eSIM. AT&T Elite 2.0 and Premium 2.0 cover the country at no charge, and AT&T and Verizon passes cost $12 a day. Otherwise a Dominican Republic eSIM bought before the flight carries the data (checked on October 29, 2026).
Does Verizon work in the Bahamas?
Yes. TravelPass covers the Bahamas at $12 a day, and Verizon adds it automatically on Unlimited Welcome and Unlimited Plus (checked on October 29, 2026). Without a pass, data costs $2.05 per MB there. Unlimited Ultimate publishes no country list, so ask Verizon about its 15 GB.
Does one Caribbean eSIM cover several islands?
Not all three. The Dominican Republic is not on our Caribbean regional plan’s country list, so it needs a plan of its own. This guide links one data-only plan per island, and a trip to the Dominican Republic and Jamaica means two plans.
Will an eSIM work in Caribbean cruise ports?
Yes, on land in port, if that island has a plan of ours. At sea your phone joins the ship’s network, which an eSIM does not replace. Each island plan works on its own island only, so check every port on the route.
