How to unlock a T-Mobile phone: 40 days on the network, paid in full, then automatic

In short

T-Mobile unlocks a phone that has been active on its network for at least 40 days on the requesting line and is paid in full. It does so automatically and remotely within 2 business days of eligibility, free (checked on October 29, 2026, T-Mobile SIM unlock policy).

Staying on T-Mobile abroad? Then the lock does not matter, and your plan may already include data there: see what T-Mobile includes abroad or all carrier roaming options. The unlock matters for another carrier’s line, such as a travel eSIM.

Who qualifies for a T-Mobile unlock?

On postpaid, you need 40 days on network on the line that asks, and any T-Mobile financing or lease paid in full. If the phone sits on a canceled account, the balance must be zero (checked on October 29, 2026, T-Mobile).

T-Mobile’s policy says: “The device must have been active on the T-Mobile network for at least 40 days on the requesting line.” For a financed or leased phone, “all payments must be satisfied and the device must be paid in full.”

The T-Mobile eligibility rules for every unlock, postpaid or prepaid, add three more: a phone sold by T-Mobile, not reported lost, stolen or blocked, on an account in good standing. For a phone another carrier sold, T-Mobile sends you to that carrier or to the maker.

The 40 days are counted on the requesting line, not from the day the phone was bought. On that wording, a phone added to your line last week has one week on the count, however old it is.

Deployed military customers in good standing can unlock on showing overseas orders, the same policy says.

Worked example (our arithmetic): you fly on Friday, December 18. A phone activated on November 1 reaches day 40 on Friday, December 11, and 2 business days later is Tuesday, December 15. Activate on November 8 or later, and day 40 falls on the day you fly.

These are T-Mobile’s own terms. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) describes the CTIA unlocking standards, which are a voluntary industry code, not an FCC rule (FCC guide, checked on October 29, 2026). The FCC proposed a 60-day unlock for all carriers in 2024; it is not in force (FCC 24-77).

Does T-Mobile unlock automatically?

Yes, if the phone supports a remote unlock, so no T-Mobile unlock request is needed. T-Mobile unlocks an eligible phone automatically within 2 business days of eligibility, free of charge (checked on October 29, 2026, T-Mobile).

Some phones cannot be unlocked remotely. For those, T-Mobile sends a notification to the phone within 2 business days of eligibility, with the next steps to finish the unlock.

Still locked after that? Contact T-Mobile, not a paid service: we do not link third-party unlock sellers. T-Mobile’s page mentions an unlock code only for hotspots and some tablets, requested from T-Mobile.

Free is T-Mobile’s policy, not every carrier’s: compare all unlock rules.

Prepaid T-Mobile phones: 365 days or the refill rule

A T-Mobile Prepaid phone qualifies once 365 days have passed since activation on the T-Mobile network. Sooner, it qualifies with more than $100 in refills for each active line and more than 14 days since purchase (checked on October 29, 2026, T-Mobile).

LineT-Mobile’s rule
PostpaidActive at least 40 days on the requesting line; paid in full if financed or leased through T-Mobile
Prepaid, 365-day pathAt least 365 days since activation on the T-Mobile network
Prepaid, refill pathUnder 365 days: more than $100 in refills for each line active on the account, and more than 14 days since purchase

Prepaid also has a cap of 2 unlocks per line in the last 12 months. Once a prepaid phone qualifies, the same automatic unlock in 2 business days applies, under the same policy.

Metro by T-Mobile has its own rule: 365 days from activation, for phones bought from Metro, then automatic within 2 business days (checked on October 29, 2026). See Metro’s row.

How to check: T-Mobile.com, T-Life, iPhone, Samsung and Pixel

How to unlock a T-Mobile phone once it qualifies: check the status in 2 places, your T-Mobile.com account or T-Life. On Samsung and Pixel, T-Mobile’s page has you finish with Permanent Unlock (checked on October 29, 2026, T-Mobile).

  • T-Mobile.com: Accounts → choose the line → Check device unlock status.
  • T-Life: Manage → choose the line → Device lock status, which also shows your progress toward eligibility.
  • iPhone: “No SIM restrictions” next to Carrier Lock means unlocked; the three taps are in Is my phone unlocked?.
  • Samsung: T-Mobile’s page says Settings → Connections → More Connection Settings → Network Unlock → Permanent Unlock, then restart.
  • Pixel: with a T-Mobile SIM or eSIM in it, get the T-Mobile Device Unlock (Pixel) app from the Play Store → Check eligibility → Permanent Unlock, then restart.

The Samsung path is T-Mobile’s, not Samsung’s: Samsung publishes no lock check, and AT&T prints a different label. Google lists none either, and says a carrier-bought phone could be SIM-locked for up to 2 years (Google).

Menus can differ by model and software version. Some older Android phones have a Device Unlock app preinstalled, T-Mobile says; if you cannot find the app or menu, contact T-Mobile.

Unlocked: adding a travel eSIM next to your T-Mobile line

Once the phone is unlocked, keep your T-Mobile line and add a data-only travel eSIM beside it. Apple says that if you keep both lines on, the capabilities on your primary line will continue to work (Apple).

Apple also notes: “You might still incur roaming fees from your home eSIM.” Check what your T-Mobile plan charges abroad.

Moving your own T-Mobile line to a new phone before the trip? T-Mobile’s page says to turn off SIM Protection first (T-Mobile, checked on October 29, 2026). The rest is under T-Mobile eSIM and how to transfer an eSIM.

Before you buy, confirm with Is my phone unlocked? and Does my phone support eSIM?. Then follow how to install an eSIM and pick a plan on our country pages: data only, your US number stays on your main line.

Frequently asked questions

Can I unlock my T-Mobile iPhone myself?

No. Apple says only your carrier can unlock an iPhone, and the carrier might take a few days (Apple). T-Mobile unlocks eligible phones that support a remote unlock on its own. For an eligible iPhone that is still locked, T-Mobile’s page says to contact T-Mobile so it can submit the unlock.

How long does it take to unlock a T-Mobile phone?

Up to 2 business days once the phone is eligible: T-Mobile unlocks supported phones automatically and remotely, free. Eligibility takes 40 days on the line for postpaid and 365 days for prepaid, or less under the prepaid refill rule (checked on October 29, 2026).

Where is the T-Mobile Device Unlock app?

In the Google Play Store, for a Pixel. T-Mobile’s page says to download the T-Mobile Device Unlock (Pixel) app with a T-Mobile SIM or eSIM in the phone. Some older Android phones have a Device Unlock app preinstalled; if you cannot find it, contact T-Mobile.
