# Straight Talk, Tracfone and Total Wireless unlock policy: what each brand says, checked and dated

Straight Talk, Tracfone and Total Wireless each say an early unlock, before your minimum period of service, carries a charge of up to $300. None of the three states that period on a page we could read (checked on October 29, 2026, [Straight Talk](https://support.straighttalk.com/en/topics/policies-and-procedures/unlocking-policy/)).

This site is not affiliated with any carrier named on this page; we sell eSIMs. [How we compare](https://esimworld.us/how-we-compare/)

You may not need a Straight Talk or Tracfone unlock at all. If you travel on your Straight Talk or Total Wireless plan, the lock doesn't matter: see [roaming on Straight Talk](https://esimworld.us/roaming/#straight-talk) and [on Total Wireless](https://esimworld.us/roaming/#total-wireless). [Another carrier's travel eSIM](https://esimworld.us/unlock/carrier-locked/) is different: Apple says that to use another carrier abroad, your iPhone "cannot be locked to a carrier" ([Apple](https://support.apple.com/en-us/118227)).

## What does Straight Talk say about unlocking?

The Straight Talk unlock FAQ sets a charge of up to $300 if you unlock before its minimum period of active service. The period itself sits on a separate policy page, which did not open for us (checked on October 29, 2026, [Straight Talk](https://support.straighttalk.com/en/topics/policies-and-procedures/unlocking-policy/)).

The FAQ's exact words: "If you have not met the required minimum period of active Straight Talk service, Straight Talk may unlock your device, but you will incur a charge of up to $300, depending on how long your service was active prior to the unlocking request."

So $300 is a ceiling tied to how long your line was active. The FAQ gives no scale, so we can't price an unlock at month four.

## What is the Tracfone unlock policy?

The Tracfone unlock FAQ repeats the rule: "Tracfone may unlock your device, but you will incur a charge of up to $300". Its minimum period is missing there too (checked on October 29, 2026, [Tracfone](https://support.tracfone.com/en/topics/policies-and-procedures/unlocking-policy/)).

The brands are one family. Tracfone's support site lists Simple Mobile, Straight Talk, Total by Verizon, Net10 and Walmart Family Mobile as "its family brands". All three link the same unlocking policy page.

## What does Total Wireless say about unlocking?

Total Wireless prints the same rule: "Total Wireless may unlock your device, but you will incur a charge of up to $300". The charge again depends on how long your service was active, and no period is given (checked on October 29, 2026, [Total Wireless](https://support.totalwireless.com/en/topics/policies-and-procedures/unlocking-policy/)).

Its separate device-unlock page on totalwireless.com returned an access error when we checked, so the support FAQ is all we quote. Treat a Total Wireless unlock period from a forum as unconfirmed until the brand prints it.

## Does an eSIM lock the phone to these brands?

No. All three say activating their eSIM will not lock your phone to them ([Straight Talk](https://support.straighttalk.com/en/topics/policies-and-procedures/unlocking-policy/), [Tracfone](https://support.tracfone.com/en/topics/policies-and-procedures/unlocking-policy/), [Total Wireless](https://support.totalwireless.com/en/topics/policies-and-procedures/unlocking-policy/)). The rule runs the other way: a phone you bring must already be unlocked, and Tracfone checks at activation (checked on October 29, 2026).

Tracfone's words: "We will check to ensure your phone is unlocked and eligible to sign up when going through Tracfone's activation process."

## Where is the unlock period?

All three brands send you to one "Unlocking Policy" page, tfwunlockpolicy.com, for the unlock eligibility requirements. It returned an access error (HTTP 403) to a plain request and to a browser, and we did not work around it (checked on October 29, 2026).

That page is the official source, so open it yourself: [unlocking policy](https://www.tfwunlockpolicy.com/wps/portal/home/). Periods quoted on other sites for a Straight Talk, Total Wireless or Tracfone unlock come from search snippets. None of them is on a page we could read, so we give none.

## What does the FCC say about these brands?

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) order DA 26-43 of January 12, 2026 waived the FCC's handset unlocking rule for Verizon. That includes "the unlocking commitment that Verizon agreed to as part of its acquisition of TracFone" (checked on October 29, 2026, [FCC DA 26-43](https://docs.fcc.gov/public/attachments/DA-26-43A1.pdf)).

A footnote lists the prepaid names TracFone used, among them Straight Talk Wireless, Net10 Wireless, Total Wireless and Simple Mobile. While the waiver is in effect, Verizon committed to the CTIA Consumer Code, an industry code and not an FCC rule.

For a prepaid phone unlock, the FCC describes the code's standard as "no later than one year after initial activation". It adds a condition: "consistent with reasonable time, payment, or usage requirements" ([FCC](https://www.fcc.gov/consumers/guides/cell-phone-unlocking)).

The order does not call that the brands' term today, so we don't either. Verizon's own rule: [Verizon unlock policy](https://esimworld.us/unlock/verizon/).

## How to request an unlock

For an unlock request, all three FAQs give one line, 1-888-442-5102, and say a request may take up to two business days to process. The instructions come by email: "Email is the only way we can deliver these codes directly to you" (checked on October 29, 2026).

Two limits before you call. A phone paid in full can still be refused: the FAQs say a device "branded by the manufacturer" "can ONLY be used by one brand". For a phone that can't be unlocked, they mention "a partial refund or credit towards a new handset", on terms set by the policy page.

1. Open the [unlocking policy page](https://www.tfwunlockpolicy.com/wps/portal/home/) and note your brand's minimum period; if it doesn't load, ask for it on the call.
2. Call 1-888-442-5102 and, if you are inside the period, ask what you would owe: the FAQs cap the charge at $300.
3. Watch your email for the unlock instructions, spam and junk folders included, as the FAQs advise.
4. Confirm the lock is off with [Is my phone unlocked?](https://esimworld.us/unlock/is-my-phone-unlocked/), then check [Does my phone support eSIM?](https://esimworld.us/esim-compatible-phones/).

Start well before your flight: Apple notes it "might take the carrier a few days" to complete a request ([Apple](https://support.apple.com/en-us/109316)). For other carriers, see [all unlock rules](https://esimworld.us/unlock/). Once the phone shows unlocked, pick a plan on [our country pages](https://esimworld.us/countries/).

## Frequently asked questions

### Can I bring a locked phone to Straight Talk?

No. Straight Talk says a phone you bring for its eSIM "must be unlocked and on our list of compatible eSIM devices". If yours is locked, its FAQ tells you to contact your current provider and ask for the unlock first.

### How much does it cost to unlock a phone from Straight Talk?

Up to $300 if you unlock before the minimum period of active service, depending on how long your service was active (checked on October 29, 2026). The FAQ gives no charge for after that period, and the period itself sits on a policy page we could not read.

### Do Straight Talk, Tracfone and Total Wireless unlock automatically?

Not on the pages we could read. All three FAQs describe a request: you call 1-888-442-5102, allow up to two business days, and get the unlock instructions by email. None of them mentions an automatic unlock.
