# Boost Mobile unlock policy: 1 year on prepaid, after payoff on postpaid, automatic within 2 business days

Boost Mobile unlocks a prepaid phone 1 year after first activation and a postpaid phone once it is paid off. Both unlock automatically within 2 business days of eligibility (checked on October 29, 2026, [Boost](https://help.boostmobile.com/docs/unlocking-policy)).

This site is not affiliated with Boost Mobile; we sell eSIMs. [How we compare](https://esimworld.us/how-we-compare/)

You may not need an unlock. Boost's Global Roaming add-on, $10/month at an introductory price, works on your Boost line in 90+ countries (checked on October 29, 2026, [Boost Global Roaming](https://www.boostmobile.com/global-roaming)).

The lock only matters when you add another carrier's eSIM. Check both first: [Is my phone unlocked?](https://esimworld.us/unlock/is-my-phone-unlocked/) and [Does my phone support eSIM?](https://esimworld.us/esim-compatible-phones/).

## Who qualifies for a Boost Mobile unlock?

Boost unlock eligibility has two triggers. Prepaid phones qualify 1 year after first activation; postpaid phones once financing is complete, or at once if paid in full (checked on October 29, 2026, [Boost](https://help.boostmobile.com/docs/unlocking-policy)).

| | Boost prepaid | Boost postpaid |
|---|---|---|
| Trigger | 1 year after first activation | Financing plan complete; paid in full at purchase means eligible right away |
| Device balance | A financed phone must be paid off in full | Paid off through the financing plan |
| Account | Not in "suspended" status at the one-year mark | No account term in the postpaid rule |
| How it unlocks | Automatically and remotely, within 2 business days of eligibility | Automatically and remotely, within 2 business days of eligibility, "without additional fee" |

The payoff and suspension terms are prepaid terms. A prepaid account that is suspended at the one-year mark keeps the phone locked until the account is out of "suspended" status.

Deployed overseas with the U.S. military? Boost unlocks the phone if you or a family member on the account is an active member with overseas deployment papers. You also need to be a current Boost customer in good standing, and Boost has to be technically able to do an international SIM unlock. Request it at 833-50-BOOST (833-502-6678).

Set the Boost Mobile unlock policy beside the CTIA industry code that the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) describes, and two differences show. Boost spells out the terms the code leaves open, and it counts from eligibility, not from a request.

| | Boost's policy | CTIA code, as the FCC describes it |
|---|---|---|
| Prepaid | 1 year after first activation; "reasonable time" and "payment or usage requirements" mean a paid-off device and an account not suspended | "no later than one year after initial activation, consistent with reasonable time, payment, or usage requirements" |
| Postpaid | After any financing plan; right away if paid in full | After "the fulfillment of the applicable postpaid service contract, device financing plan or payment of an applicable early termination fee" |
| Timing | Automatic, within 2 business days of eligibility | "Within two business days after receiving a request" |
| What it is | [Boost's own policy](https://help.boostmobile.com/docs/unlocking-policy) | An industry code, not an FCC rule ([FCC guide](https://www.fcc.gov/consumers/guides/cell-phone-unlocking), checked on October 29, 2026) |

## Does Boost unlock automatically?

Yes. Boost unlocks an eligible phone remotely within 2 business days after it qualifies, with no unlock request needed (checked on October 29, 2026, [Boost](https://help.boostmobile.com/docs/unlocking-policy)).

Where a remote unlock isn't technically possible, Boost notifies you that the phone is eligible instead. Think you qualify and still see a lock? Boost's policy says to make the unlock request at 833-50-BOOST (833-502-6678).

What holds it back differs by plan. On prepaid, it is an unpaid device balance or a suspended account; on postpaid, a financing plan that is still running. The two business days start when the phone qualifies, not when you call.

Boost's policy also mentions prepaid phones "unlocked for international travel" at a customer's request. It doesn't say who qualifies or how early, so ask Boost before you count on it for a trip in the first year.

Worked example (our arithmetic): you activated a Boost prepaid phone on November 15, 2025. It qualifies on Sunday, November 15, 2026, so the 2 business days run to Tuesday, November 17, 2026. A trip on December 5 works; a trip on November 1 falls inside the first year, so plan that one on Global Roaming.

To confirm the unlock status on an iPhone, look for "No SIM restrictions" next to Carrier Lock ([Apple](https://support.apple.com/en-us/109316)). Menu paths for iPhone and Samsung live on [the lock check guide](https://esimworld.us/unlock/is-my-phone-unlocked/#iphone).

## Boost and phones from other carriers

Boost does not unlock phones from other carriers: "We're not able to unlock Devices from other carriers," its policy says (checked on October 29, 2026, [Boost](https://help.boostmobile.com/docs/unlocking-policy)). A phone locked elsewhere needs that carrier's unlock first.

This is the bring-your-own-phone trap. Ask the first carrier for the unlock, then run Boost's IMEI check on its [bring-your-own-phone page](https://www.boostmobile.com/plans/byod) before you switch.

Apple says the same from its side: "Only your current carrier can unlock your iPhone" ([Apple](https://support.apple.com/en-us/109316)). Third-party unlock sellers are no part of Boost's policy, and we link none.

Every other carrier's rule: [all unlock rules](https://esimworld.us/unlock/).

## Unlocked: a travel eSIM next to your Boost line

With the Boost lock off, a travel eSIM can run next to your Boost line. Apple says an iPhone used with another carrier abroad "cannot be locked to a carrier" ([Apple](https://support.apple.com/en-us/118227)); more in [what carrier-locked means](https://esimworld.us/unlock/carrier-locked/).

[Your US number](https://esimworld.us/help/keep-your-us-number/) stays on your main line, and most of our plans are data only; check the plan's calls/SMS fields.

Boost sets up its own eSIM in the Boost app or on its site at activation, over Wi-Fi ([Boost](https://www.boostmobile.com/plans/byod)). Even the international data eSIM site that Boost's help page links needs an unlocked phone, Boost notes ([Boost help](https://help.boostmobile.com/docs/global-roaming)).

Still locked before a trip? Boost's Global Roaming add-on is $10/month at an introductory price, with 1GB of data (checked on October 29, 2026, [Boost Global Roaming](https://www.boostmobile.com/global-roaming)). More data costs $10/GB, up to an additional 9GB; details are on [Boost roaming](https://esimworld.us/roaming/#boost-mobile).

Unlocked and ready: [install the eSIM](https://esimworld.us/how-to-install-esim/), then pick [a country plan](https://esimworld.us/countries/).

## Frequently asked questions

### Does Boost Mobile support unlocked phones?

Boost's IMEI check decides. Enter your phone's IMEI on Boost's bring-your-own-phone page before you switch to see if it is compatible (checked on October 29, 2026). A phone still locked to another carrier needs that carrier's unlock, because Boost can't lift it.

### How long does it take to unlock a phone once it is paid off?

Up to 2 business days after it qualifies, and Boost does it automatically. A postpaid phone qualifies when its financing plan is complete, or right away if you paid in full. A financed prepaid phone also has to reach 1 year after first activation, with the account not suspended.

### Can I use a travel eSIM on a Boost phone?

Not while it is locked to Boost, because a travel eSIM is [another carrier's plan](https://esimworld.us/unlock/carrier-locked/). Once the lock is off, add the eSIM next to your Boost line. On a prepaid phone under a year old, use Boost's Global Roaming add-on, or ask Boost whether it will unlock the phone for the trip.
