# How much data do you need for your trip? Estimate it by destination and days

Multiply your daily cellular data at home by your trip days: at 0.8 GB a day, 10 days need about 8 GB (our arithmetic). Pick your destination and trip length above for an estimate. Your phone's Settings show the cellular data you have used, though some carriers measure usage differently ([Google](https://support.google.com/pixelphone/answer/2819524), checked on October 29, 2026).

You may not need an eSIM. If your carrier plan already includes data where you are going, you may need nothing extra, so check your own plan first. If you will mostly message over hotel Wi-Fi, a small plan may be enough.

One bill trap: with both lines on, the travel eSIM carries your data, but Apple warns, "You might still incur roaming fees from your home eSIM" ([Apple](https://support.apple.com/en-us/118227)). [Turning data roaming off](https://esimworld.us/help/data-roaming/#turn-on-off) covers your US line.

## How to use the estimate

The calculator answers "How much data do I need for a trip?" with our own estimate, not a reading from your phone. Your usage screen gives a better number: its total divided by its days, times your trip days, rounded up to the next plan size.

Worked example, our arithmetic on sample figures: a usage screen shows 24 GB over 30 days, which is 0.8 GB a day. A 10-day trip comes to 8 GB, so the next size up is 10 GB.

The method is the same for a week in Europe or two weeks in Japan; only the sizes on sale change by country.

Two things move the result. The counter counts only cellular data, so if you lean on Wi-Fi at home, you may use more abroad.

If you share data with other devices as a hotspot, their use adds to yours. The plan doesn't state a hotspot rule — check the plan page.

## How to see what you're using abroad

iPhone and Pixel both keep a running total of cellular data in Settings (checked on October 29, 2026). Google adds a caveat: "Your phone measures the data usage shown in your phone's Settings app. Some carriers measure usage differently."

| Phone | Path | What it shows |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone | **Settings** → **Cellular** or **Cellular Data** → look under the **Cellular Data** heading ([Apple](https://support.apple.com/en-us/109037)) | Cellular data used |
| Pixel | **Settings** → **Network & internet** → **SIMs** ([Google](https://support.google.com/pixelphone/answer/2819524)) | Total data used at the top, then **App data usage** and **Data warning & limit** |

Menus can differ by model and software version.

Use the screen to watch the trend and keep a margin; your plan's balance is on your order page. On Pixel, **Data warning & limit** lets you "Set warning to get alerts about your data use" ([Google](https://support.google.com/pixelphone/answer/2819524)).

With iOS 26 and later, your iPhone may offer to turn on the travel eSIM when you arrive. It then asks you to "Turn on Low Data Mode or select Not Now" ([Apple](https://support.apple.com/en-us/118227)). Install the eSIM before you go: [how to install an eSIM](https://esimworld.us/how-to-install-esim/) has the steps.

## GB plan or daily-limit plan: which fits your trip?

Plan size and plan length are separate limits, and most packages we sell last 7, 15 or 30 days (catalog snapshot, October 29, 2026). A 30-day 5 GB plan can run out of data in week one, while a 7-day plan can end with data left.

On most of our plans the days start when the eSIM first connects at your destination — check the activation rule shown on your plan.

Five of our Japan GB plans, final prices in US dollars, data only:

| Plan | Valid | Price |
|---|---|---|
| 1 GB | 7 days | $3.99 |
| 3 GB | 30 days | $7.99 |
| 5 GB | 30 days | $9.99 |
| 10 GB | 30 days | $14.99 |
| 20 GB | 30 days | $22.99 |

Match your trip total to the GB column. The days column only has to cover your trip.

Our [Japan](https://esimworld.us/sim-card/japan/) plans also come with a daily limit. The 7-day one is Unlimited — 3 GB/day at full speed, then reduced to 1 Mbps — at $23.99, data only. Seven days at 3 GB a day come to 21 GB at full speed, about what the 20 GB plan holds (our arithmetic).

The difference is the spread. The 20 GB has no daily cap, while the daily-limit plan slows to 1 Mbps on any day past 3 GB. [What a daily data limit means](https://esimworld.us/esim-unlimited/) covers the wording.

Next step: check that your phone can take a travel eSIM with [Is my phone unlocked?](https://esimworld.us/unlock/is-my-phone-unlocked/) and [Does my phone support eSIM?](https://esimworld.us/esim-compatible-phones/). ## Frequently asked questions

### Is 20GB enough for 2 weeks in Japan?

Yes, if your daily use stays under about 1.4 GB: that is 20 GB spread over 14 days (our arithmetic). Check it against the daily average from your usage screen. Our Japan 20 GB plan lasts 30 days, at $22.99, data only.

### How do I check my data usage abroad?

In Settings: on iPhone, open Settings and tap Cellular or Cellular Data, then look under the Cellular Data heading. On Pixel, tap Network & internet, then SIMs: the total is at the top. Google notes that some carriers measure usage differently from the phone.

### Is a daily-limit plan worth it?

Only if most of your days come close to the cap. Our 7-day Japan plan is Unlimited — 3 GB/day at full speed, then reduced to 1 Mbps — at $23.99, data only. If your daily average sits well below 3 GB, a GB plan sized to your trip total fits better.
